โœ‹Hands up if you have you have ever taken a course, only to flounder when you tried to put your new skills into practice.

I have. And it’s one of the reasons I am so passionate about making learning stick.

Most instructors teach skills through a combination of lecture and application.

๐Ÿƒ๐ŸฝBut the leap from learning a concept to putting it into practice can be a huge one.

Sometimes way too big. It can be frustrating for your students because it leaves the learning process unfinished. What’s often missing is a step in between. And it’s a step that can accelerate the learning process.

๐ŸŽซ It’s a technique I call “lifting the curtain”.

With the lifting-the-curtain approach, you reveal your own techniques, processes, systems, and templates to your students. It’s like giving them a VIP ticket with backstage access.

When you lift the curtain you don’t keep your cards close to your chest. You put all of your cards on the table for your students to see and learn from.

It’s powerful because:

โœ… It makes it easy for learners to put their skills into practice quickly

โœ… It saves your students time and guesswork

โœ… It builds trust between you and your students

How can you do it? In the spirit of lifting the curtain, here’s how I do it๐Ÿ‘‡

1/ ๐Ÿ“Use examples from your work. We all know that real examples make concepts tangible. When you lift the curtain, you draw from your own examples. So when I teach session design, I take people through an example of a session I designed. I walk students through my own process, and how I made design decisions. And even things I would change the next time.

2/ โœจCreate experiences. Giving people first-hand experience bridges the gap between theory and practice. But like John Dewey says, “We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience.” (Thanks Alexandra A. for sharing that quote!). So when I teach how to build psychological safety, I give students an experience of what it feels like. And then we reflect on the facilitation techniques I used and how students can adapt these techniques with their own groups.

3/ ๐Ÿ“ˆGive away your templates. Templates eliminate the problem of not knowing where to start. Templates include outlines, session plans, spreadsheets, Notion templates, and more. In my course, I share step-by-step frameworks and virtual session outlines. This gives students something tangible that they can easily adapt to their live online events.

4/ ๐Ÿง—โ€โ™‚๏ธShare your struggles. An important part of learning new skills is making mistakes and learning from them. Your students can learn a lot from your struggles, and how you overcame them. It helps your students avoid making the same mistakes. And it builds trust in you.

How could you lift your curtain in your sessions?
