๐Ÿ“กThe Quest #104: The Secret to Thriving as a Facilitator in the Age of AI

๐Ÿค”What is the secret to thriving as a facilitator in the age of AI?

You may have heard a lot about AI-powered tools and how they are disrupting pretty much everything.

Last week’s newsletter explored how AI-powered tools like ChatGPT can help you become an even better facilitator. (P.S. Thanks for your messages! It was a relief to realize I’m not the only one trying to figure this out).

One thing is clear: a new phase in virtual facilitation has arrived.

The last time I felt this kind of disruption in facilitation was when the pandemic hit. If you are like me, this may make you may feel excited, overwhelmed, uncertain, and anxious about AI in facilitation.

Change is happening fast.

Since hitting publish on last week’s newsletter I’ve learned even more about new AI-powered tools and use cases from other facilitators. It’s helping me get a clearer picture of what facilitation may look like in the future and what we facilitators need to know.

What’s the secret to thriving as a facilitator in the age of AI? That’s our quest for this week ๐Ÿ”Ž

๐Ÿ“กTakeaways from AI + Facilitation LinkedIn live stream

Last Friday seasoned facilitators Marie Dubost and Joost de Leij co-hosted a fascinating live stream on LinkedIn on AI + Facilitation. They covered top tools, use cases, and ethical concerns.

In case you missed it, here are my top 3 takeaways:

๐Ÿ‘‰ AI can do a lot. Joost shared use cases where he used ChatGPT to help write a strategy as a starting point for a facilitated discussion and for subject-area research to help him when he facilitates in specialized sectors.

๐Ÿ‘‰ AI still has a long way to go. ChatGPT still struggles to summarize the key meeting points from meeting transcriptions. And as Marie pointed out, it isn’t very skilled in coming up with a workshop outline (it went way over time for starters๐Ÿ˜…). And there are more than a few ethical issues when it comes to things like plagiarism, privacy, copyright, bias, and more.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus on the human side of facilitation. AI will take over roles like accessing knowledge and developing strategy. Facilitators should focus instead on behavior, design, psychology, and group process – the things that humans do best.

Here are some of the AI-Powered tools & resources Marie and Joost mentioned in the session๐Ÿ‘‡

ChatGPT – a tool that can write content, answer questions, and generate lines of code based on a prompt.

โ€‹Dall-e – a tool that can create realistic images from a voice description.

โ€‹Otter.ai – an app that records meetings, takes notes in real-time, and generates an automated summary to share.

โ€‹Nvidia Maxine Eye Contact – a tool that helps you keep your gaze on the camera when you are presenting (I haven’t tried this yet and I worry about making it seem like I am looking at my audience when I am not).

โ€‹Awesome ChatGPT Prompts – a website to help you generate prompts to get more out of ChatGPT.

โ€‹All things AI – a website to keep up to date with developments in AI.

“Facilitation will focus more and more on the human side of connection, empathy, and listening skills.” Joost de Leij

๐Ÿ’ฌ3 Ways AI can help you run better online courses (and 3 ways it can’t)

Over the past week, I’ve been experimenting with ChatGPT, testing ways you can use it to run live sessions and courses. Here’s a twitter thread on what I’ve found out so far๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’ชLearn how to Speak with Confidence with vocal coach Caroline Goyder

Even though I facilitate live sessions for a living, I realized about a year ago that I had never formally learned how to calm my nerves, project my voice, and cut my (um) fillers.

That’s what I learned in Caroline Goyder’s brilliant online course Master Your Meetings. Caroline is a vocal coach, best-selling author, and TEDx Speaker. And she is a true expert in her craft.

Taking Caroline’s course felt like being let in on all of the “secrets of the trade”. I now have a “speaking checklist” that I run through before leading my live sessions – including exercises for warming up my voice.

I’m excited to share that Caroline is going live on February 1st with 2 online courses. I highly recommend the course to anyone who wants to find more power in their voice.
