Greetings from sunny Barcelona! ☀️
Online facilitation continues to evolve at lightning speed. ⚡ Keeping up can feel overwhelming.
That’s exactly why I started The Quest back in October 2020.
And what a journey it’s been! ✨THANK YOU✨ for being on this adventure with me.
I get even more fired up when I hear your reasons for joining The Quest, like:
- “I want to create more impact.”
- “I want to better serve my groups.”
- “I want my group members to feel alive.”
Because that’s exactly what it’s all about. 🔥
My overarching goal remains the same:
To make it easier for live session leaders like you to design and lead ✨EXCEPTIONAL✨ online experiences that create real impact.
As we wrap up 2024, here are my Top 10 Insights from writing 185 editions of The Quest 💪 and leading hundreds of live Zoom sessions – experimenting, stumpling, and discovering what truly works.
Here they are👇
1️⃣Design for distraction.
Virtual audiences are more distracted than ever—multitasking, zoning out, and slipping off-camera.
I’ve learned the power of checking in way more often: reduce distractions at the start, then pause frequently to keep participants present.

2️⃣Exceptional online sessions are an art – and science.
We know by now that in-person approaches don’t always work online.
This year, I dove into why: understanding how we interact and process information virtually is key to designing sessions that truly engage.

3️⃣Shift from presenting to “workshopping.”
Traditional presentations just don’t land anymore. Virtual audiences want less passive listening and more active doing—hands-on workshops that solve real problems in the moment.
Exceptional facilitation is about enabling breakthroughs, not delivering slides.

4️⃣Asynchronous-first design is gaining traction.
Live sessions are no longer the whole story. Tools like Loom and Miro make asynchronous collaboration easier than ever.
Savvy facilitators are pairing live sessions with self-paced, on-demand elements to meet audiences where they are.
Maybe that’s why this was the most read edition of The Quest in 2024? 🤷👇
The Quest #182: 🚀How I Launched My Digital Course
5️⃣Design for two audiences: live and replay.
Most facilitators focus only on their live audience, but replay audiences are often 2 even 3x larger.
I’ve started designing with both in mind—acknowledging replay viewers and sharing extra tips during live breakout time.

6️⃣Keep it simple.
With so much new software and gear, it’s easy to overcomplicate sessions.
But I’ve learned (again!) that simplicity wins. A lighter touch—fewer tools, more space—often unlocks deeper group insights.

7️⃣Same principles, new skills for virtual success
Just how different is virtual facilitation from in-person? This year I became clearer that the core principles of great facilitation—active listening, asking powerful questions, and creating engagement—are the same.
But online spaces demand new skills: mastering tech, reading digital rooms, and designing for virtual audiences.
8️⃣Keep experimenting and you’ll keep growing
I had a few moments this year of feeling a little stuck falling back on my same tried-and-tested tools and activities – maybe you did too?
And that worried me because I know that being an exceptional virtual facilitator hinges your ability to stay fresh and creative.
That’s where having a toolkit – or 10 – comes in handy.

9️⃣Community-driven learning is on the rise.
People are craving connection, not just content. Platforms like Circle (where I host my Breakthrough Facilitation and Live Session Magic courses) and peer-driven experiences are thriving.
The shift? From top-down teaching to community-driven learning where participants co-create the experience.
🔟AI can’t replace you, but it can help you.
AI tools are everywhere. But exceptional sessions still thrive on your human touch.
AI is getting even better at helping you organize your ideas or brainstorm, but it can’t replicate your curiosity, energy, or intuition. That’s your superpower.💪

🎯My 3 Online Facilitation Goals for 2025
As I look ahead to 2025, I’m focusing on:
- Leveling up my tech skills. Tools like OBS and Ecamm are on my radar.
- Building a mobile studio. I want the freedom to facilitate exceptional sessions from anywhere.
- Keeping it simple. Less overplanning, more emergent magic.
Thank you for being part of The Quest. Here’s to more breakthroughs, growth and magic in 2025! ✨
